Synopsis:

Armed with a passion for classic B-grade horror movies, a script co-written by his twin brother, and a wicked crush on his death-obsessed neighbor; hardcore horror fan Jason Nightshade must finish his student film.

But his plans are derailed when the children of suburban Silver Creek start disappearing – his twin brother among them. Battling a possessed video camera, a crazy zombie dog, a monstrous bully, and a frighteningly broken down family life, Jason embarks on a mission to find his lost brother so the two can write an ending for his story.

As an any horror fan knows, saving the day won't be easy, as Jason finds himself forced to face the real world where death isn't just a splash of fake blood on a camera lens.

My rating: ★★★☆☆

This one sounded like a lot of fun when I first heard about it, especially since I love horror, but it actually wasn't exactly what I was expecting. I do, however, commend it in its uniqueness. I've never read anything like this, so I really liked that!

Another thing I loved about this book was all the horror movie references and trivia. It was a lot of fun, especially the bit when some of my favorites were mentioned (like A Nightmare on Elm Street! Classic!) or ones I've never seen/heard of before. I got a whole list of awesome-sounding horror movie to go watch now! :D

One thing that kinda bothered me was that it felt like a couple of different stories were being told instead of one, although I suppose that was the point. But they didn't really feel all that interrelated. While the story wasn't exactly jumpy and confusing, I just wasn't feeling it. We're filming a movie, then our zombie dog is going nuts-o, all while kids in town are going missing... Just, what?

But, okay, I'll admit, my favorite part of the book was actually the script that Jason and his brother were working on. It was a pretty good slasher flick, one I'd probably watch, were it a real movie!

A big part of the story revolves around Jason's missing twin brother. I was very curious to find out what happened to him, but my curiosity was not fulfilled entirely. We are left with a sort of open ending, which some people might be okay with, but not me.

But overall, I really enjoyed the read! I really loved the writing... It was almost poetic, in a gory, creepy sort of way. Just how I like it! I loved all the references and little tidbits we learned about some of the best classic horror movies out there (another of my favorite parts), and the amazing, creepy descriptions. Although I was kind of iffy on all these different stories correlating with one another (until the end, that is), I did find myself enjoying the stories separately. A definite must-read if you are a fan of the horror genre or of you're barely getting into it. You guys will definitely find some great horror movies referenced here that you'll want to watch!

  1. Sorry the different storylines felt random...but it sounds like things make a bit more sense near the end. If I was a horror buff, I think I'd enjoy this one overall because of the references, etc. I always like when certain books make pop culture references.
