Synopsis:

Everyone thinks Sophie’s sister, Nell, went crazy. After all, she heard strange voices that drove her to commit suicide. But Sophie doesn’t believe that Nell would take her own life, and she’s convinced that Nell’s doctor knows more than he’s letting on.

As Sophie starts to piece together Nell’s last days, every lead ends in a web of lies. And the deeper Sophie digs, the more danger she’s in—because now she’s hearing the same haunting whispers. Sophie’s starting to think she’s going crazy too. Or worse, that maybe she’s not...

My rating: ★★★★☆

I was very excited to read The Murmurings because a.) it just sounded super creepy and b.) it had a creepy, gorgeous cover to go along with it! And I am happy to report that it was as creepy as I hoped! This would make such a great horror movie!

I loved the premise of this book! I thought the paranormal aspect was very intriguing and quite unique, since I have never read about this sort of thing before. But I do love how you (and Sophie, even) have moments of uncertainty, not knowing whether what you are seeing out of the corner of your eye and hearing is actually something supernatural or just in your head, fearing mental illness to be at cause. Either way, it’s horrifying.

“Hey, you still there?” I asked tentatively. I’m met only by the sound of my own breathing, and I feel strangely alone all of a sudden.
“Best not to get used to that,” I tell myself. It’s not a good thing to start missing the company of your own delusions.

Speaking of horrifying, being stuck in a mental institution against your will is just the worst! Not being able to get out even though you don’t belong there, the helplessness and the frustration... if that’s not terrifying then I don’t know what is. Not to mention that this place has some deep dark secrets of its own.

As for the characters, I adored Evan! He was so sweet and loyal! I loved the relationship between him and Sophie, and how it initially started off as just a friendship. Sophie was great, too! But the things she has to go through... the things she’s seeing and hearing after what her sister went through—so disturbing! I felt so awful for her, what she was going through, but also because of her loss. And her mother isn’t much help either. Her life is just a mess right now, so I was very happy she befriended Evan when she did.

Overall, I very much liked The Murmurings! My favorite part was definitely how creepy and it was.

that was scary

But, okay, it wasn’t enough to give me nightmares ;) When it comes to books, I’m hard to scare. But I did appreciate that spooky ambiance! I also really liked the mystery and finding out what happened to Nell and what’s currently happening to Sophie... it was insane! It was also suspenseful AF, especially in the asylum! The imagery and writing in this was just amazing! I will definitely be checking out some of this author’s other works!
